Making Tax Digital for VAT

In development — currently being tested in HMRC’s sandbox.

Live VAT filing is not yet available

We are developing a VAT workspace for keeping digital records, reviewing VAT figures and managing the return journey in one place.

This page describes the planned service and its current development status. Live VAT filing through AAA WebFiling remains subject to HMRC production access. Creating an AAA WebFiling account does not currently provide access to live VAT filing.

Sandbox testing is available in your account

Open VAT in your account or beside any company in your portfolio. Create a separate HMRC test account for each company, connect it, and try sample records, return preparation and optional HMRC Assist feedback. Use synthetic data only; sandbox submissions do not file a real VAT return.

Open VAT sandbox

If you have a VAT return due, continue using your existing filing arrangements. AAA WebFiling is independent software operated by HAMILTONN LTD and is not part of HMRC.

The workflow we are developing

These functions are being tested in the sandbox. They are not currently available for live VAT returns.

Digital VAT records

The planned workspace will bring sales, purchases and supporting adjustments together as the basis for the VAT calculation.

Return preparation and review

The planned review journey will show the nine VAT return boxes for the relevant period before the user makes a declaration or requests submission.

Obligations and filing records

The planned service will retrieve VAT obligations after HMRC authorisation and retain submission status, receipt information and related records for authorised users.

Initial accounting scope

The initial service is being developed for standard invoice-based VAT accounting. It does not cover the Flat Rate Scheme, Cash Accounting Scheme, Annual Accounting Scheme, margin schemes, retail schemes or VAT group registrations. Automatic partial-exemption calculations are also outside the initial scope.

Users will remain responsible for checking their accounting treatment, the accuracy of their records and return figures, and their authority to act for the VAT registration concerned.

HMRC Assist for VAT — sandbox testing

We are separately testing HMRC Assist, an optional service that can provide feedback on draft VAT return figures before filing. This is an early-stage API being tested in HMRC’s sandbox. It is not available for live returns through AAA WebFiling.

When an authorised test user requests Assist feedback, the draft figures are sent to HMRC for review by its automated rules. The request does not file a VAT return. Feedback is advisory, and receiving no feedback does not establish that a return is accurate.

Read our privacy policy for how VAT information, draft feedback requests and required fraud-prevention information are handled.
